market Overview

Indian Plastic Industry

Since we already know that Asia has been the world’s largest plastics consumer for several years, i.e., accounting for about 30% of the global consumption, the Global Plastics and Polymer Consumption is expected to grow at 5% and touch a figure of 627 million tons by the end of 2025.

Not surprisingly, the growth rate of the Indian Plastics Industry is the highest in the world. With the unprecedented growth of the Construction Industry, the demand for PVC has risen exceptionally high where the domestic production meets only 50% of the demand. Consumption of plastics is growing at more than 16% per annum leading to tremendous opportunities for plastic products as well as plastic machinery manufacturers.

At present, approximately 50,000 industries are operating in the Plastics Sector and most of these industries are micro, small and medium scale. It is noted that these industries contribute Rs 3.5 lakh crore to the country’s economy, and also generate employment opportunities for more than 50,000 people. Interestingly, Plastics worth Rs. 35 thousand Crores is exported from India.

Odisha, additionally, has a Plastic Polymer and Allied Cluster (PPAC) which has a good number of units operating in it. With a reasonably good level of automation, abundant raw materials and easy to access markets, the State has huge potential for production and export of a wide range of products. Odisha is being set up to synergize and consolidate the raw material potential, and to promote vertically integrated infrastructure in making value-added products.

The Odisha Government is constantly working in developing new materials and innovative applications and providing support to investors in setting up manufacturing units in Plastic and Polymer Sectors.

Odisha is undoubtedly known as one of the centres of excellence in the field of Polymer application.
